Motorcycle Couriers Appeal to NYA Over Alleged Police Harassment

The Motorcycle Couriers Union of Ghana (MCUG) has formally petitioned the National Youth Authority (NYA), urging it to intervene in what they describe as persistent harassment, intimidation, and extortion by officers of the Ghana Police Service particularly the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) at Tesano.

In a letter dated October 27, 2025, signed by General Secretary Abugri Timothy Agengri, the union stated that its members continue to suffer arbitrary arrests, detentions, and impoundments of their motorcycles, despite operating legally. These actions, they argue, are disrupting livelihoods and delivery services relied upon by many Ghanaians.

The MCUG outlined three key demands:

  • Immediate end to police harassment of motorcycle couriers
  • Formation of a committee to investigate the conflict between riders and the Tesano MTTD, including representation from all stakeholders
  • Implementation of the committee’s recommendations to foster better relations between couriers and law enforcement

The union expressed confidence in the NYA’s ability to resolve the issue and protect its members’ rights, emphasizing the urgency of a fair and prompt response.

This petition reflects growing concerns among Okada and courier riders about police conduct and calls for reforms in traffic law enforcement.
